The Borough's Newest Program Could Lead to $19,000 Worth of Home Improvement Incentives for Madison Homeowners


Since 2017, the Mayor & Council, Environmental Commission and Sustainable Madison Committee have endorsed an initiative designed to reduce household energy use and to connect Madison homeowners with incentives available from New Jersey's Home Performance with Energy Star program. From its inception through spring 2019, more than 200 Madison households have participated.

For many people, getting an energy audit sounds difficult or is not even on the to-do list because they don't know about it. Many homeowners are also unaware that they can qualify for up to $4,000 in cash rebates and either $10,000 in zero-interest financing or $15,000 in low-interest financing to install energy efficiency improvements that can reduce household energy use by up to 30 percent.

The Borough of Madison $49 Home Energy Assessment program streamlines the process of choosing a home energy auditor, making the process more understandable, accessible and safer. Ciel Power LLC was awarded the contract to become the officially recognized home energy audit contractor for Madison. Ciel has also administered similar programs in Summit, Millburn, Princeton, Glen Rock, and Highland Park, New Jersey.
As the campaign name indicates, Ciel will perform home energy audits in Madison for just $49, a significant savings from the industry average of $250 to $500. Assessments include safety and efficiency testing of combustion appliances, depressurization of the home, evaluation of existing insulation levels, and a professional consultation that includes improvement recommendations tailored to each home based upon their savings to investment ratio.

Homeowners received a letter from Mayor Robert Conley providing additional information about the campaign and urging residents to participate in this town-wide initiative, when it started in 2017. 
 The program is based on a model designed by Sustainable Jersey, a nonprofit organization the provides tools, training, and financial incentives to support communities as they pursue sustainability programs. Ciel Power LLC will work directly with the borough to promote and administer services to Madison residents.
