Responsibilities
The Emergency Service Unit (ESU) primary function is to provide tactical support in high-risk situations where a special response is required. The regional unit is complemented with trained personnel from Florham Park, East Hanover and the Hanover Township Police Departments. The ESU Tactical Response Team provides a rapid response to life threatening incidents and or other Emergency Situations that require a police response.
While waiting for the arrival of the Sheriff Department's S.E.R.T., the ESU's responsibilities include containment/evacuation, tactical medical support, quick reaction/response, negotiations and intelligence gathering until mutual aid support arrives at the scene.
Training
Members have been trained in SWAT tactics by attending and training with area SWAT teams within and outside our county. Training exercises are conducted on a bimonthly basis. The ESU's training include classroom, and field training. This encompasses specialized weapons training/qualifications and scenario-based situations training. Live dynamic house and school entry drills supplement the classroom sessions.
