Who says new takeoff pattern would be better?
Madison Eagle, Thursday, August 24, 2000
EDITOR:
A letter to the editor in the Aug. 10 Madison Eagle described a plan to change the takeoff pattern from Morristown Municipal Airport, and quoted claims that it would be a "win-win" approach and that effectively "nobody is expected to be worse off."
Unfortunately this is not the case. When the planes bank left as they leave the airport to reach the new route, the takeoff noise is increased in the area at the western boundary of Madison. The former noise-control officer of the airport acknowledged that the change could have this effect. This area of Madison and surrounding towns already bears the brunt of low-flying planes and noisy planes as they land at the airport under certain wind conditions.
Before the town endorses the change, or the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) makes the change, they should do a study and hold a public meeting. The noise burden should be shared equitably among all communities affected, and landing as well as take-off noise should be considered. An independent noise-impact study is a fairer and more reliable way to determine the impact on all of Madison.
