Morristown Municipal Airport

Morristown Municipal Airport (MMU) is the tenth busiest General Aviation Airport in the United States. It ranks second in number of total operations of all airports in New Jersey following Newark International. MMU is ranked third in the state in number of take-offs and landings behind only Newark and Teterboro. MMU actually has more total operations than Houston International, San Antonio International and Tampa International airports, and is the eleventh busiest municipal airport in the country.

MMU is a 24-hour facility, 7 days a week. Even though the tower at MMU is closed between the hours of 10:30 pm and 6:45 am, planes can and do remotely access and turn on the landing strip lights from the air and arrive/depart at any time during the night. MMU serves general aviation, charter and corporate aircraft instead of any public need.

MMU recorded 216,000 take-off, landing and air space transition activities in 1996, 260,000 in 1997 and 261,000 in 1998. Based on the information we have, the number of jet operations at MMU has increased from 3% (6,900) of MMU’s total operations in 1976 to an amazing 38% (99,100) of total operations in 1998, and this growth in MMU jet traffic will only continue.

MMU has a US Customs Operation and promotes itself as a "convenient resource for International travelers." In 1995, the Federal Airport Improvement Program gave MMU $428,000 in Federal funds to remove obstructions and construct an Aircraft Deicing Facility. MMU has also received millions in Federal funds for other projects.

In 1979, the EPA Office of Noise Abatement and Control declared MMU a noise sensitive airport as a result of an on-site evaluation. This study was conducted in response to strenuous citizen complaints about uncontrolled jet traffic that impacted the five communities surrounding MMU.

The regional FAA tower on Long Island (TRACON) controls the air traffic at MMU. The priority given to the commercial jet traffic using the main east-west route into Newark affects the flight paths of traffic arriving at and departing from MMU, often resulting in excessive noise over densely populated residential neighborhoods. TRACON also authorizes commercial jet traffic to traverse the MMU noise sensitive corridor at low altitudes at night when the MMU tower is closed.
