“THE HISTORIC VALUE OF OUR COMMUNITY ”

PANEL DISCUSSION FEATURING JOHN CUNNINGHAM, MARY-ANNA HOLDEN, ALICE GLOCK
AND A STATE REPRESENTATIVE

Rich in history back to the early 1700's, Madison has a wonderful character with its older buildings, homes, historic districts, large old trees and unique industries such as commercial rose growing.  This panel discussion will have an educational focus about  Madison's historical assets, their value to our community and preservation possibilities.  The panel will bring information from several viewpoints beginning with John Cunningham's overview of area history.  Mayor Mary-Anna Holden will talk about the future of our historic treasures and community.  As she has said, "You don't know where you're going until you know where you've come from."  Alice Glock has been involved with Mead Hall and the Historic Preservation Program at Drew and will talk about the assets of Drew from an historic as well as an educational view.  A fourth panelist has been invited from the New Jersey Preservation office to add information about preservation possibilities.

“CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY, PART III
ISAAC GORDON AND THE CIVIL WAR IN NEW JERSEY ”

PRESENTED BY JOHN TURVEY, MADISON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT
Participant in the Service Learning Program

Part I explored the history and contributions of the Black Entrepreneur in Madison, Part II, Madison Black Church history,
and our next program will focus on the story of Isaac Gordon.  He was a slave who came to Madison with a friend, Union General E.E. Potter shortly after the Civil War.  The Gordon gravestore is in Madison's Hillside Cemetery and was brought to the attention
of the Historical Society by a resident who saw it and called to see if we had any information about him.

Research and the program are being done by Madison High School student, John Turvey, a Civil War buff, as part of the Service Learning Program, and he is planning a research trip to Washington, North Carolina, the town where Isaac Gordon joined General Potter as his guide.  John will probably expand the program beyond Isaac Gordon and into the Civil War in New Jersey.  We are pleased to work again with the Madison High School History Department and look forward to this program.
