25-Apr-2002 VIDEO: Historic Tour of the New Leonard Mines at Mt Hope (Mt Hope is in Rockaway). Video is 57 minutes long. It was originally aired in June 1998 on the cable program "Inside Morris County Parks". The tour of the mine is led by a former miner at this site -- Mr. Ken Cramer. Ken Cramer is the "real deal" -- a miner who worked his way up to mid-management at the mines & was put in charge of mining safety at this site, so he knows this mine very well. The New Leonard Mine Complex was a state-of-the-art WWII iron-making and processing facility. The mine stopped operating in the 1960's and the mining company left behind almost everything -- mining machinery, etc. This video compliments the talk on the Morris Canal which covered how iron and other products traveled via the canal. With this video our society members will hear how iron ore is actually produced and observe an actual industrial site and the conditions under which miners in Morris County worked.
09-May-2002 Madison Historical Society Annual Dinner Meeting! Featured talk: Preserving Open Space in Your Community. (Mr. Elliott Ruga) Cost is $35 for members, $40 for non-members.
Elliott Ruga is President of Lantern Oak Video Productions and Vice President of the Washington Valley Community Association. He will talk on the impact of sprawl in Madison and local communities. His topic "Controlling Sprawl: Whose Land is it Anyway?" will touch on the Exxon property, the Abbey property, and the Great Swamp.
