This is an index of articles which have appeared in the Madison Eagle Newspaper from 1882 to the present as well as an index of the library's  historical photograph collection. The actual articles and photographs may be viewed at the library.

The work of creating the index has been funded by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.  We thank them for their generosity.

This is a work in progress and some subjects and names have not yet been indexed.

Search Tips

Quick Search - the easiest search

  1. Search for one word only.  This must be a person's last name ( Smith ) or the first word of a subject (Farmer's not  Farmer's Market or market ).

  2. Capitalization does not matter; punctuation does.

  3. If you are not sure, try a variety of spellings and punctuations. ( Farmer's, Farmers', Farmers )

  4. Type the word in the  Text to Search for :  box,  then click the button on the left which says  START SEARCH

  5. Items in the photograph collection are displayed first and then the newspaper articles arranged from the oldest to the most recent.

Advanced Search -

  1. The buttons on the right can move you around in the Eagle Index database.  Click on the button on the right which says  ADVANCED SEARCH

  2. In the first  Field to search  change author to keyword by clicking on the arrow and choosing keyword.

  3. In the first Data to Locate box type in the whole name of a person (last name, first name). Try using the first name only after the last name.  Then try another search adding the middle name (no comma between first and middle).  Try a third search using the first name and the middle initial with a period.  Weddings and obituaries are  formal and often use a middle name or initial.

  4.  Click the button on the left which says START SEARCH

  5. To search for a subject, follow the directions in  2. and  3. above.  Instead of a name, type a complete phrase such as Chamber of Commerce.

  6. Again, capitalization does not matter; punctuation does.

  7. If you are not sure, try a variety of spellings and punctuations (St. Vincent's Church,  St. Vincent's, St. Vincent Martyr, Saint Vincent's).

  8. If you would like to narrow your search to an exact year after you have entered the name or the subject, go to the second  Field to Search  and change author to year by clicking on the arrow and choosing year.  Remember, a wedding announcement, especially if the wedding occurred in the fall or winter, may not appear in the Eagle until the following year.

  9. To return to Quick Search  click on the button on the right which says  QUICK SEARCH
