Oxford English Dictionary

        The Madison Public Library's CD-ROMs and Online Databases are mounted on the two computer terminals behind the Information Desk.  Directions for using the CD-ROMs are located in binders next to the terminals.  Help is also available at the Information Desk.  Printers are attached to all terminals.   You may print up to 2 pages with out charge.  Additional pages are 15 cents each - please pay at the Information Desk.  After searching the indexes, ask a reference librarian for help in locating any periodicals you may need.

Time limits apply if someone is waiting to use a CD-ROM.

Britannica Online includes the complete Encyclopaedia Britannica, a dictionary and the Britannica Book of the Year. You can find more than 72,000 articles and 75,000 definitions. There are also over 130,000 links to web sites on the Internet. You may link to Britannica from this page. You will need your Madison library card number
 

Columbia Granger's World of Poetry    indexes over 135,000 poems by 20,000 poets.  It may be searched by author, title, subject, first line, last line, keyword or category Over 10.000 of these classic poems are available full-text and may be printed out.  The database also lists anthologies where the poem may be found.  The library owns many of these works. 

 

Gale’s Quotations: Who Said What may be searched by author or speaker name, keyword or phrase, or the occupation of the author or speaker. It contains almost 117,000 quotations, including current quotes from various periodical sources.   
 

Literature Resource Center Direct access to biographies, bibliographies, journal articles and critical analysis of more than 120,00 authors and their works. You can connect to this database from this web page.


Marquis Who’s Who 
is an amazing CD-ROM which is updated semiannually.  It encompasses 20 volumes of the Who’s Who library from the past decade, offering more than 788,000 biographies. It includes Who’s Who in Entertainment, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry and many more.     (Top)   
 

Masterplots Complete 2000  allows you to browse the entire Masterplots collection, including: Fiction Series, Poetry Series, Nonfiction Series, Drama Series and others. Searching may be done by author, title, subject, text, genre or characters. Masterplots III includes summaries and criticisms of writings. 
 

Oxford English Dictionary    is the full, 20-volume dictionary, not an abridgment.  It can be searched by pronunciations, quotations, etymology and phrases, as well as by single words. 
 

Street Atlas USA    enables you to locate and display detailed street-level maps of the entire U.S. This database may be searched by individual street address, place-name, area code or zip code or latitude and longitude.
 

Ancestry Library Edition  is one of the most important genealogical collections available today. It has unparalleled coverage of the U.S. and the U.K. including census, vital, church, court and immigration records.
