COMPANY INFORMATION

People studying financial information

There are several ways of finding company information at the Madison Public Library in books, magazines, online databases, and the Internet.

Most of the books are on the business table and a few are at the reference desk.
The reference desk is always staffed so don’t hesitate to ask for information on a company.

Following is an outline of the types of resources you will find here and on the Internet :

Addresses and phone numbers or major personnel for a company?

Directories:
published by Standard and Poor’s and Dun and Bradstreet. These are arranged alphabetically, geographically, and by type of industry.

Online database:
REFERENCE USA   Each listing can be sorted by business name, location, yellow page heading, SIC code and size of operation. Residential,  Health Care Professional and Canadian Residential and Business information is also available.  Information is culled from current telephone books and includes officers or manager, range of sales, number of employees, and branch or headquarters location. There is also phone, fax and toll free numbers (when available), address, and year the first ad appeared.  In addition, a map showing the location is available.
From a remote location printing and downloading will be limited to 25 records.

Financial information and the history of a company:
Hoover's Directories
, annual reports ( we have the major companies), the Wall Street Journal, Barrons, and the New York Times (we have an index to the articles).  EBSCOhost, an index to 3200 magazines and newspapers (1000 of them in full text), is another possible source of articles on the company which you are researching.
