MISSION STATEMENT
The Madison Police Department's Emergency Service Unit
primary function is to provide tactical support for the Borough of Madison
in high-risk situations where a special response is required.
The E.S.U. Tactical Response Team provides a rapid
response to life threatening incidents and or other Emergency Situations
that require a police response. While waiting for the arrival of the
Sheriff Department's S.E.R.T., the ESU's responsibilities include
containment/evacuation, tactical medical support, "Quick"
reaction/response, negotiations and intelligence gathering until mutual
aid support arrives at the scene.
ESU
Lockdown drill
On February 21, 2006 the Madison Police
Emergency Services Unit conducted a lockdown drill at the Madison High
School. Student actors participated and played the roles of both
suspects and victims; assisting the specialized unit to conduct
drills. Exercises included searching corridors and classrooms for
both active and barricaded suspects and locating victims and evacuating
them.

HISTORY
In 2002 the Madison Police Department E.S.U. was developed
to provide a more stable; well-trained and consistent response for
possible violent ations related to school violence, domestic and homeland
security. The unit consists of a 10 member team including a
Paramedic.
The Madison Police Department ESU has been
trained in SWAT tactics by attending and training with area SWAT teams
within and outside our county. Training exercises are
conducted on a bi-monthly basis.
The ESU's training include classroom, and field
training. This encompasses specialized weapons
training/qualifications and scenario-based situations training. Live
dynamic house and school entry drills supplement the classroom sessions.
Because of the change in world events and changing
tactical strategies, the once simple and primary focus has changed into
providing a rapid response in the event that the Borough of Madison faces
the catastrophic and all too often "Critical Incident."
