Supporting Organizations

The Downtown Development Commission

The Downtown Development Commission was initiated by Mayor Elizabeth Baumgartner and the Borough Council in October of 1981, following a study by Projects for Public Space, funded through a Dodge Foundation Grant.

Since this time, the DDC has been advocating for the Downtown.  The Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor and Council and represent a cross section of the community with specific representatives that include:

  • Mayor
  • Borough Council Representative
  • Resident Representative
  • Merchant/Landlord/Business Owner (4 reps)
  • Higher Education Rep
  • Non-Profit Rep
  • Corporate Rep
  • Board of Education Rep
  • Planning Board Rep
  • Senior Rep
  • Media Rep
  • At Large (4 Reps)

The creation of the DDC was a watershed moment in the history of the downtown because it intentionally promoted the need for the entire community to support Madison's commercial district.  As a result, the entire town better understands how important a vibrant Main Street is to the community.
