Minutes:  The minutes of the November 29, 2007 meeting are not yet available. The minutes of the January 17, 2008 meeting were presented and approved.

 

Presentations:

 

Gene Cracovia – Shade Tree Management Board

Gene discussed the tree ordinance brought to the Council, who voted to bring it to a final reading on March 24, 2008. The ordinance is posted on the web, and Gene asked the individual members and the Commission as a whole for their support of the ordinance when it comes to a vote. (Note – The MEC sent a memo in support of the ordinance to Gene on March 20, 2008.)

 

Gray Russell – Montclair’s Environmental Manager

Gray presented an overview of Montclair’s environmental policies and how they work in his town. Montclair has a sustainable guidance document that focuses on energy efficiency and can be referred to when establishing policy for things such as Green construction and stormwater management. Gray discussed the following things that Montclair does: recycling of electronic components twice per year; composting advocacy including selling bins at cost; Farmer’s Market; sustainability such as promoting alternate fuel cars, traffic lights upgrade to LED, energy audits for all township facilities, Green schools, and Bike Montclair; anti-idling campaign; and solar power on roof of DPW garage established with a power purchase agreement. Gray said future things being considered include co-generation facilities for cluster of municipal buildings; Green roofs; and LED streetlights.

 

Doug Smith – Madison’s Recycling Coordinator

Doug provided an overview of recycling in the Borough, including a list of tonnage from 2005, a model ordinance for municipal source separation and recycling, and the dates of household hazardous waste collections.
