Tri-County Sustainable Communities Forum
March 3, 2011 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM EST
Camden County College, Blackwood, NJ
Sponsored by Sustainable Cherry Hill & Sustainable Jersey
This event is free, but registration is required. Light refreshments served. Once registered, you will receive a questionnaire to find out about YOUR concerns and passions to help us with our planning.
Sustainability efforts are expanding throughout our communities. Many of these endeavors face similar challenges, such as coordinating community/municipal efforts, getting volunteers or leveraging state/federal incentives.
The Tri-County Sustainable Communities Forum will bring people together from Camden, Burlington and Gloucester Counties to share challenges and exchange ideas. This forum is for all people interested in moving their communities toward sustainability, including local green team members, environmental commissions, township employees, business people, educators or residents.
Sustainability issues do not end at town borders. Our efforts need to bridge these borders, as we forge relationships with others working for a greener South Jersey. Join us as we make history by building sustainable strength across our region! A representative from Sustainable Jersey will be on hand to answer your technical and procedural questions about the certification process.

Municipal Animal Management Programs that Work! - 2011 AWFNJ Conference
March 19-20, 2011
Rutgers, Busch Campus Center,
*Sustainable Jersey communities are eligible for reduced rates ($60)*
Municipal officials report that the number of animal-related calls from citizens rivals any other issue, and our communities need fiscally responsible and effective programs to manage domestic animals and wildlife. Municipalities can earn up to 60 points, more than one third of the minimum 150 points necessary for certification, by implementing “Animals in the Community” actions in Sustainable Jersey.
Join Sustainable Jersey staff on Saturday, March 19th to learn how you can apply the Calgary model of Animal Services, touted as the most successful on the continent, to your town’s unique needs, and visit our booth to learn how you can earn points toward certification.
Bill Bruce, the Director of Animal & Bylaw Services, will talk about his philosophy for shifting from animal control to responsible pet ownership and maintaining voluntary citizen compliance by having understandable policies, removing barriers to responsible pet ownership, engaging partners, training staff in conflict resolution, and having a strong public education program. This presentation will summarize the background of Calgary’s current dog and cat programs as well as areas of continuous improvement for Calgary’s Animal & Bylaw Services which are self-funding and require no tax dollars for support. The programs boast a steady decrease in the number of aggressive dog incidents and an 88% return-to-owner rate for dogs and a 55% rate for cats which reduces euthanasia rates.
*During registration, choose “Sustainable Jersey Registered Municipalities”: Saturday only ($60) or Saturday & Sunday ($100). Registration will be available Wednesday, February 16th through March 15th at 11pm when online ticket sales close.*

Tools include building a shared understanding of sustainability, metrics and tracking, best practices, and leadership tools and support.
All of our participants remain connected through local community networks and partnerships, and continue the ongoing work of creating fundamental and lasting change for a sustainable New Jersey.
